Hotel New Ueno, the gateway to Tohoku, warmly welcomes tourists

Ueno, a town where history and culture intersect

Ueno Station is known as the ‘Gateway to the Tohoku Region’.

Ueno Station, which will celebrate its 142nd anniversary in 2025, was established as a terminal station for Japanese railways and continues to play this role today.

Ueno Onshi Koen (Ueno Imperial Gift Park), where cherry blossoms bloom in spring, Ueno Zoo, famous for its pandas, and the Ueno Ameyoko shopping street, with its many restaurants, attract many tourists from both domestic and overseas destinations.

Hotel New Ueno is conveniently located just one minute from the East Ueno and Asakusa exits of Ueno Station, and is a well-established hotel that warmly welcomes a wide range of tourists.

Charm of a small hotel

Located in front of Ueno Station, Hotel New Ueno is used by many domestic and overseas guests.

Originally named after the ryotei inn Uenotei, the main building was rebuilt at the time of the Olympics, and the ‘New’ was added to give the hotel its current name, Hotel New Ueno.

Sadatoshi Watanabe, manager of the hotel, says: ‘The good thing about being a small hotel is that the distance from the reception desk to the guest rooms is very close.

Leaving your usual environment, including when travelling or staying for business, can be a stressful and anxious experience.

The hotel’s aim is to be a place where such feelings can be eased and people can spend time in peace.

Smart room entry and exit.

Check-in is possible from 15:00.

A card key system has been introduced, which is burden-free by simply making contact with the key, and efforts have been made to make the hotel accessible to a wide range of age groups and overseas guests.

Clean and well-furnished single rooms

Japanese-style rooms

Comfortable rooms to suit each guest

Even though it is a long-established hotel, it has been renovated in line with modern times, and the attention to detail for a comfortable stay is noticeable.

Rooms range from singles to doubles, twins and triples, with a full range of rooms to suit all guests’ needs.

There are also Japanese-style rooms, which are said to be used by elderly people and overseas guests who are not familiar with Japanese-style rooms, as they find the feel of tatami pleasant.

The rooms have a desk and Wi-Fi connection, making them ideal for business use.

Chocolates and other services

A range of attentive services

One of the attractions of Hotel New Ueno is the many services it offers to make guests’ stay more comfortable.

The chocolates and café set in the guestrooms are hospitality services that Mr Watanabe experienced and introduced when he travelled abroad.

In addition to toothbrushes, the front desk provides a selection of amenities, including a choice of bath salts and a ladies’ plan-only amenity set, all selected with the hope that guests will be able to relax after a tiring journey.

After the renovation of the new building, spacious unit bathrooms were introduced with the intention of ‘relieving fatigue in a spacious bath, even if only for a short while on your journey’.

The baths are designed so that guests from overseas, where shower culture is strong, can also enjoy a relaxing soak while stretching out their legs.

Onsen (hot spring) baths are not easily experienced in Tokyo, but the bath salts provided will help to ease the fatigue of your journey.

Spacious bathrooms

A choice of comfortable loungewear

Only in Ladies’, Twin, Compact Twin and Double rooms, yukata are usually provided, but pyjamas are also available to make your stay more comfortable.

Electric blankets are also available for the winter period only, to keep you warm and comfortable during the cold season.

Breakfast room Uenotei

Japanese-style set meals with a distinctly Japanese flavour

There is no dinner plan, but Japanese set meals can be enjoyed at the ‘Uenotei’ restaurant for breakfast for 1,430 yen (tax included).

Overseas guests also rate this restaurant highly for its standard Japanese breakfast fare of grilled salmon fish, freshly cooked Ibaraki rice, miso soup and tsukemono pickles.

Spacious reception area for your leisurely time

The waiting room at the front desk has six spacious sofas.

The waiting room is a relaxing space where you can take a breather between journeys, watching goldfish swimming gracefully and a model railway whose scenery changes from season to season.

Water servers, ice machines, coffee vending machines and smoking rooms are available. There is also a corner with computers, tourist information magazines for Tokyo and surrounding areas, brochures for overseas travelers, manga and magazines, so you can make the most of your spare time.

To enable guests to enjoy sightseeing comfortably and empty-handed, luggage can be stored before check-in and after check-out. Storage is free for one day, and a charge of 300 yen applies thereafter, regardless of whether or not you are staying overnight.

Many tourists use Ueno as a base from which to travel to Tohoku, Yamanashi, Kyoto and other destinations, and being able to sightsee with a minimum of luggage is a major factor in reducing the burden of the journey.

Conclusion

Located in the heart of Ueno, Hotel New Ueno is a warm and welcoming accommodation offering a comfortable and convenient environment.

Many guests who have actually used the hotel have commented on the smooth flow from the front desk to their rooms, and on the politeness of the customer service and abundance of services, and would like to stay there again. From these evaluations, it is easy to see why the hotel has been loved for many years.

In addition to the attractive location just a minute’s walk from Ueno Station, the attentive attention to detail that relieves travellers’ fatigue is a major attraction that encourages them to return.
