Kumegawa Wing Hotel – Simple and Spacious Accommodation in Tokyo!

In this article we showcase the Kumegawa Wing Hotel, which offers spacious accommodation and is located in one of the lesser-known and more off-the-beaten-track areas in western Tokyo.

Kumegawa Wing Hotel: A Retro Hotel Tucked Away in a Peaceful Tokyo Neighborhood

When most people think of Tokyo, they tend to picture the frenzied hustle and bustle of areas like Shinjuku or Shibuya – buzzing with excitement and activity, but all that color and stimulation can be somewhat overwhelming at times!

However, nestled away on the western side of Tokyo is the quiet and peaceful Higashimurayama. One of Tokyo’s lesser known areas, Higashimurayama and the Kumegawa neighborhood have a quaint, small town feel to them. Despite this, Kumegawa Station also offers excellent access to many other areas of the city, as well as to Tokorozawa in nearby Saitama.

It is in this peaceful area where you’ll find the Kumegawa Wing Hotel. Just a short walk from the station, the area around this hotel is so quiet you may even forget that it is in Tokyo!

Much like Kumegawa itself, the hotel has a simple, peaceful and retro atmosphere. The interior color scheme mostly consists of earthy tones, such as reds browns and creams.

The lobby lounge features charming design details such as a natural cobblestone floor, wrought iron light fixtures designed in Germany, and warm lighting throughout. When we arrived, we were seated in the dining area, served a drink, and the warm, friendly proprietor made us feel at home.

Until now the hotel’s core demographic has been business travelers and people staying in the Kumegawa area for events. The proprietor told us about the surprising number of different events taking place in and near Kumegawa – these included traditional Japanese cultural experiences, a multitude of different concerts, horse racing, and even a popular anime song competition!

Spacious and Affordable Rooms in Tokyo

One issue many visitors staying in Tokyo experience is the relative lack of spacious, reasonably priced rooms. Many of Tokyo’s more budget-friendly hotel rooms are so small it can be a struggle to even open a suitcase once inside.

However guests staying at the Kumegawa Wing Hotel are unlikely to experience this issue! The rooms are far more spacious when compared to those of most other budget Tokyo hotels, with the largest being 32.22 square meters. All rooms feature comfortable, semi-double beds. The average room cost is less than 100 dollars per person per night, making it very accessible for budget-conscious travelers.

Rooms are modestly decorated and unpretentious. The room decor is warm, and mostly features reds, browns, and creams. Design details include artworks such as traditional silkscreen art – the proprietor himself selected these, as he has a passion for silkscreen artworks!

The Twin and Deluxe Twin Rooms include sofas, and some rooms also offer sweeping city and mountain views – a rarity in Tokyo!

Rooms come with a wide range of amenities, including all necessary toiletries as well as lotions and cleansers. Most of the products are made by the popular Japanese cosmetics brand DHC. The toiletries are also eco-friendly, and items such as toothbrushes and combs are made from recycled plastic. Amenities are available in the lobby, and can be taken as needed.

Breakfast is complimentary, and includes a range of breads and baked goods such as danishes and croissants. Drinks on offer include freshly ground coffee, tea, milk and fresh juices. Breakfast can be enjoyed in the lobby lounge, and food allergens are clearly indicated.

The retro streets of Kawagoe

Despite its quiet atmosphere, the area around Kumegawa Station is teeming with excellent eateries and karaoke spots! And though Higashimurayama is somewhat off the well-worn tourist track, the area is full of surprises and unique experiences.

The nearby Kodaira is home to many unique museums, including the Kodaira Furusato Mura Open Air Museum, the Hirakushi Denchu Art Museum, Musashino University Art Museum & Library, and even the entirely unique Gas Museum and Sewerage Museum!

Kodaira Furusato Mura is a reconstructed farming village featuring restored 17th and 18th century buildings, and a visit there will take you back in time, to pre-modern Japan.

Kumegawa Station is also a mere 5 minutes by direct train from Tokorozawa, home to the architecturally stunning Kadokawa Culture Museum, as well as to the otherworldly teamLab display, Resonating Life in the Acorn Forest.

The charming Edo-era style Kawagoe area, with its traditional Japanese architecture and food is also within easy access from Kumegawa Station, and is an excellent destination for a day trip!

With all the charm it has to offer, the Higashimurayama area of Tokyo is definitely a great place to stay for those looking for peace and quiet, great access to day trip locations as well as easy access to central Tokyo!
